2002 Winter Olympic Pairs Skating Gold Medal
Canadian skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier are awarded the gold medal in pairs figure skating after initially winning the silver. After a narrow 5-4 decision to award the gold to Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze of Russia, controversy swirled around the result because of errors in the Russian's performance and a flawless performance by the Canadians.
Further controversy was raised when evidence was found that the French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne had been pressured to vote for the Russians. Following an appeal by the Canadian Olympic officials to the Court of Arbitration for Sport the International Skating Union and the International Olympic Committee announced that the French judge would be suspended and her marks would be removed from the results. The decision would award the gold to the Canadians and allow the Russians to keep their medal.
This marks the second time in Olympic history where a second gold medal has been awarded where the results of a competition was in dispute.
