NASCAR Champion Dale Earnhardt Dies at 49
Dale Earnhardt, one of the most recognized and successful drivers in the NASCAR Winston Cup racing series, died on February 18, 2001 in a last lap crash in the Daytona 500. While helping first place finisher Michael Waltrip and second place finisher, his son Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (both in cars owned by Earnhardt), to stay at the head of the pack, he hit the turn four wall and suffered fatal head injuries.
Earnhardt was a seven time Winston Cup Champion, tying him with "The King," Richard Petty for the record. In 1998 Dale was voted one of NASCAR's "50 Greatest Drivers" along with his father Ralph.
