Live Flag To Flag Coverage For The First Time
On February 18, 1979 the 21st Daytona 500 was televised live by CBS. This is the first NASCAR race shown live on national television from start to finish. The race came down to the last lap when Donnie Allison, who had lead for most of the race, and Cale Yarborough, who had come back from three laps down, crashed on the back straight. This allowed Richard Petty, in third place, to come by and with his sixth Daytona 500 with Darrell Waltrip close in second.
