Schumacher Breaks F1 Championship Record With His Sixth
On October 12, Ferrari driver, Michael Schumacher finished eighth in the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix (the final race of the 2003 season) to secure his record setting sixth (and fourth consecutive) Formula 1 World Championship. The record he tied in the 2002 season originally set in 1957 by Juan Manuel Fangio. Schumacher earned 93 points on the season beating McLaren-Mercedes driver Kimi Räikkönen by only two points. Räikkönen had mounted the strongest challenge to Schumacher's F1 dominance in several years, by leading the championship for much of the season.
In the final race at Suzuka a damp track for part of qualifying mixed the field placing Schumacher in 14th for the start. Even after knocking his with off in an altercation with Takuma Sato (in his first ever F1 race) he still managed to earn eighth place and the one point he required to clinch the championship.
