In the 2001 Major League Baseball Season Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants set the season home run record at 73 on October 7, 2001, breaking the previous record by one. The 2001 total brings his career home run total to 567; an incredible average of 35.4 home runs per season.

Ownership of the ball hit by Bonds (worth an estimated $1 million) was subject to a year long court battle between two fans, one who caught the ball and Alex Popov and Patrick Hayashi who picked it up after it was dropped in a scuffle.
