The First Powered Vertical Take-Off Machine
On December 4, 1907, Paul Cornu managed to get a steel framed machine powered by a 24 hp engine off the ground. The machine weighed 575 pounds (with pilot) and used two counter-rotating rotors. The machine had primitive rotor blades and lacked enough power for true free flight, but did manage to make it off the ground in a few tethered flights.
