The Wright Brothers First Controlled, Powered Flight

Technology

After successful flights with gliders the year before, the Wright brothers developed and flew the first controlled, powered, heavier than air, aircraft the morning of December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk North Carolina. The Wright Flyer featured a twelve horsepower gasoline engine and two propellers. The first flight last 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet.

They made three more flights that morning, the longest being 59 seconds and 852 feet, before the plane was virtually destroyed by a wind gust that blew the plane over.
