On September 9, 1948 the Korean peninsula was divided into two when Kim Il Sung, along with Soviet backing, founded the communist nation: People's Republic of Korea. North Korea is divided from the South by a Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ that was established along the 38th parallel, where the Military Demarcation Line was established by the 1953 Armistice Agreement between the two Koreas.
