The U.S. And North Korea Sign A Ceasefire Agreement

Historical Events

On July 27, 1953 the United States and North Korea signed a ceasefire agreement that brought the Korean war to an end. The armistice was overseen by the United Nations and North Korean military at the "truce village" of Panmunjom. The agreement divided the Korean Peninsula along the 38th parallel with a heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone.

At the time of the armistice 650,000 South Korean troops and 37,000 U.S. troops stood South of the DMZ and more than one million North Korean troops were on the North side. As the agreement was not a peace treaty, the two sides are still effectively at war.
