The First Railway In Canada

Historical Events

The first railway in Canada, the Champlain & St-Lawrence Railroad, was inaugurated on July 21, 1836 between La Prairie (across the St. Lawrence from Montreal) and St. Jean, Quebec. Pulled by the first locomotive in Canada, the Dorchester, the first train pulled dignitaries in four carriages from St. John's to Laprairie where grand celebrations went on through the night.

The railway was created by John Molson, founder of the Molson Brewery, to solve a transportation problem, getting high quality brewer's yeast from Europe to his brewery in Montreal quickly. It formed a direct route from the St. Lawrence to the Richielieu river where ships could travel a direct route to Now York City. The railway lasted until 1873.
