Black Hawk Down
During a U.S. military operation in Mogadishu, Somalia two U.S. Army Rangers Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by rocket propelled grenades on October 3, 1993. At the site of both crashes heavy fire fights broke own between the Rangers and the forces of General Mohamed Farah Aidid. The fighting went on through the night between the members of Aidid's milita, angry Somali citizens and U.S. forces who were trying to rescue crash victims and recover casualties.
By the end of the night of fighting 18 U.S. solders and hundreds of Somalis had been killed. The U.S. would pull out of the Somalian conflict after the incident.
The events of the battle would be recounted in the Academy award winning movie Black Hawk Down in 2001.
