Maiden Flight Of The Space Shuttle

The first flight of the NASA Space Shuttle took place on April 12, 1981 when the space shuttle Columbia lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 7:00 am. The first mission STS-1 was intended to check out all the systems on the space shuttle, accomplish a safe ascent into orbit and to return to Earth for a safe landing. On board Columbia was John W. Young (Commander) and Capt. Robert L. Crippen (Pilot). The mission concluded successfully on April 14th when Columbia landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
