First Person Killed At An NHL Hockey Game

Historical Events

On March 18, 2002 Brittanie Cecil died at the age of 13 after being struck by a hockey puck at a National Hockey League (NHL) game two days earlier. Her death was caused by arterial damage as a result of her head being snapped back by the puck's impact.

The puck was deflected into the crowd after being shot by Epsen Knutsen of the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena, fracturing Brittanie's scull and injuring two others.

Though there have been three deaths in other levels of professional hockey, this is the first time someone has been killed by a puck during an NHL game.

Brittanie would have turned 14 on March 20.
