Fastest Mammal On Earth
The cheetah, indigenous to south-western Asia and Africa, is the fastest mammal on earth. Everything about the cheetah is built for speed. Large nostrils, lungs, liver, heart and adrenals give the cheetah a tremendous physical responsiveness. The long slender body is flexible and curls like a whip for huge bursts of acceleration. Special paw pads and nonretractible claws give excellent traction. Cheetahs can accelerate from 0 - 45 mph in two seconds and top speeds of 71 mph can be maintained for up to 300 yards. The fastest cheetahs have been clocked at over 90 mph.
