The Most Prolific Serial Killer In U.S. History

Historical Events

On November 5, 2003 Gary Leon Ridgway, a 54-year-old former truck painter, plead guilty to the murder of 48 women (mostly prostitutes). Referred to as the 'Green River Killer' he was named after a river south of Seattle, where Ridgway began dumping his victims in 1982. He said he targeted prostitutes "because I thought I could kill as many as I wanted without getting caught."

Ridgway was arrested on November 30, 2001, after his DNA was found in sperm found in three of the victims.

He confessed on the condition that he not be sentenced to death. Instead, on December 18, 2003 he was sentenced to 48 life terms and fined $10,000 for each victim.
