The Associated Press was founded in May 1848 in New York by 10 men representing six newspaper publishers to pool efforts for collecting international news. The newspapers at that time competed by sending reporters out in rowboats to meet the ships as they arrived in New York harbor. Competition had grown fierce and too expensive. To offset the prohibitive cost of transmitting news by telegraph they formed the news cooperative.

Since its inception the Associated Press has become the oldest and largest news organization in the world.
