V. Gene Robinson became the first openly gay man to become a Christian bishop on Sunday November 2, 2003 when the Episcopal Church consecrated him as bishop of New Hampshire.
The consecration has created a deep rift within the Anglican community. Leaders of the global Anglican Communion have said his consecration puts their worldwide association, with 77 million members, in jeopardy. Though there have been gay bishops in the past, they were not openly gay when they were elevated to their posts.
