The Birth Of Ethernet

Technology

On May 22, 1973 Robert Metcalfe of Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre, sent a memo outlining his idea for a network design. Though the technology took years to develop, the accepted birth date is the date Metcalfe first proposed it on May 22. The original design for Ethernet was a 3 Mbps transmission speed, but it had grown to 10 Mbps when the IEEE adopted the standard in the early 1980s.

Since its adoption Ethernet has grown to be the dominant network architecture for computer networks, including the Internet.
