In a landmark decision the Supreme Court found, on January 22, 1973, that the Texas criminal abortion laws, which proscribe procuring or attempting an abortion except on medical advice for the purpose of saving the mother's life, were unconstitutional. The court declared the abortion statutes void as vague and overbroadly infringing those plaintiffs' Ninth and Fourteenth Amendment rights. The ruling, a 7-2 decision by the high court, gave women a qualified constitutional right to an abortion during most of the pregnancy. This has been the basis of all legal abortions in the United States since.
