Gone With The Wind, staring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable opened for the first time on December 15, 1939 in Atlanta. The film is about Scarlett O'Hara's (Vivien Leigh, in an Oscar-winning role) experiences, in the South, during the American Civil War. The picture was nominated for an unheard of 13 Academy awards and won eight; including Victor Fleming for best direction and Hattie McDaniel in the supporting actress category (the first African-American to win an Oscar).
