The Oil Tanker Prestige Sinks Off The Coast Of Spain

After being damaged in s storm six days earlier the crippled oil tanker Prestige sank on November 19, 2002 130 miles off the north-west coast of Spain. The 19.6 million gallons of the ship's cargo, 22.6 million gallons (70,000 tonnes) of heavy fuel oil, went to the bottom of the ocean.

The 3 million gallons (20,000 tonnes) that leaked from the tanker created an ecological disaster along Spain's coast that will cost an estimated $100 to clean up. The spill has devastated the $330 million fishing industry in the area.
