The Oldest Continually Contested Sporting Trophy
On August 22, 1851 the U.S.-built schooner America beat a fleet of Britain's best in a 53-mile race around the Isle of Wight, winning by 22 minutes. A trophy, the Hundred Guinea Cup, a 2-foot-high silver jug put up by the Royal Yacht Squadron won, was the prize. In 1857 the trophy was donated to the New York Yacht Club with the condition that it be placed in international competition forever. The first race was held in 1870 and "America's Cup" is now the pinnacle of international sailing yacht competition.
