The Soviet Union Begins Construction On The Berlin WallHistorical EventsAfter closing the border between East and West Berlin construction was begun on the Berlin Wall on August 15, 1961. The wall was constructed to stop the mass exodus of people leaving communist East Germany, which was beginning to damage the East German economy. The concrete wall extended 28 miles through Berlin and 75 miles around West Berlin to separate it from East Germany. The wall became a symbol of communist oppression in Europe. After the fall of communism in East Germany in 1989 the borders were opened and the wall was dismantled. Source: History Channel Posted: 2002-08-15 3:28:45 PM This fact has been viewed 2896 times. |
