Voyager 2 Space Probe Is Launched

Technology

On August 20, 1977 the Voyager 2 space probe (the first of two probes) is launched by NASA. The probe, weighing in at one ton, was originally only intended to operate until 1981 and visiting just Jupiter and Saturn. The Voyager missions were extended and now after 25 years both voyager probes continue to relay data back to earth.

Voyager 2 is now 6.3 billion miles away. Each spacecraft carries a 12-inch, gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It also carries printed messages from then-President Carter and U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.
